The Undercover Spy Lab

In this lab, we examine a site that has been sold and see how we can replicate the results (without all the guesswork.)

The Site – TheMassageChairReviews.com

Flippa Listing - https://flippa.com/8391728-themassagechairreviews-com

Date Sold - 31st May 2017

Price Sold For - $20,000

Age of Site When Sold – 2 years

Details – This is a good example of a profitable but questionable site and proves that people are more than wiling to pay five figures for an Amazon site that could potentially have issues as the owners associates account had been closed down. But for the purpose of this case study, I'll focus on the site ranking and profits side of things.

Keywords Targeted – It targeted all types of massage chair keywords including best massage chairs, massage chair reviews etc.

Backlinks – The site has 64 backlinks from 22 referring domains according to MajesticSEO. These links are a combination of PBN's, blog comments and a couple of high authority links from .gov and .edu site.

What My Plan Would Be To Clone The Results – I would set up a brand new site using a domain name that has 'massage chair' within it. I would then create 1,000 word content posts that target relevant keywords and place Amazon native ads on each page. I would most likely need to have 75+ posts on the site to become more of an authority in the niche but these can be added on an ongoing basis.

Potential keywords I would target:

massage chair

massage chairs

best massage chair

massage chair review

massage chair reviews

full body massage chair

japanese massage chair

back massage chair

electric massage chair

heated massage chair

and other related keywords found during research.

I would use social, Web 2.0 and PBN links to rank the site over the course of 12+ months. I would heavily focus on getting topically related and thematically related backlinks..

The aim would be to get to $1,500+ per month in profit and then sell for $20,000+

The Sniper Lab

The Sniper Lab is all about creating small 3-5 page websites that target buyer keywords with an Exact Match Domain (EMD).

You simply browse the Amazon marketplace to find products, then put those into the Google keyword planner and see what searches come up. Find one that gets 250+ searches a month that has a .com available domain and you're good to go!

You can use a free keyword tool like this one to get more accurate search volumes than the Google keyword planner now gives you.

These are really simple sites to make and each can make you 4 figures in profit when you sell them. They make great additions to add to your Amazon empire.

Here are some domains you can use right now (each one is available as I'm typing this and has a clean history):

3bladeceilingfan.com – 880 searches/month
cagedceilingfan.com – 880 searches/month
2bladeceilingfan.com – 590 searches/month
blackceilingfanwithlight.com – 590 searches/month
72inchceilingfan.com – 480 searches/month
benefitsofahumidifier.com – 1,300 searches/month
aromatherapyhumidifier.com – 590 searches/month
besthumidifierfordryskin.com – 480 searches/month
bedroomhumidifier.com – 390 searches/month
besthumidifierforbedroom.com – 390 searches/month

These will obviously be snapped up fast by members but give you an idea of what to look for. A new list will be added every month.

The Ranking Lab

Stealing Backlinks

Stealing backlinks from the competition is one of the most overlooked methods of getting some great links for free. Whilst I always build PBN links, it's very natural and powerful to mix in other links too.

So how do you do it?

Simply do a search for your main keyword in Google and note down the top 10-20 sites. Then put each site into a tool like AHREFS or Majestic and see where they are getting links from. Then visit those sites and see if you can get a link from there to your own site.

This sounds really simple but not many people do it. You just go through all your competition and get links from the same places.

For example, back to our massage chair example, we put the URL into Majestic and it shows us the top 10 sites (on a free Majestic search) where the main http://www.themassagechairreviews.com/ site is getting links from.

So we go and visit those sites and see if we can place our own link on there. Whether it be a blog comment, paid listing or whatever the case may be. If a link aggregator is showing and recognising the link, then it's going to be powerful in the eyes of Google too.

If you just go and try and get 2-5 links a day, or even a week, following this method then you'll jump up the rankings faster than ever. And of course, for the most part these links are totally free to get too.

Don't underestimate this method, it may take you a tiny bit of time but it will pay off when your sites start ranking and making you money.

The Q and A Lab

Questions that have been sent in this month:

Q – How long do backlinks take to fully kick in?

A – Sadly (for us), it can take a good 12 months to see the full power of links these days. Google is understandably a lot slower in ranking new sites because their system is already so good at providing the best results. I see jumps in rankings generally after 1 month, then after another month or two, then continual rising. That's why it is important to not rush your linking, get impatient and send too many links too fast.

Q – How much content do I need on a page for it to rank?

A – If you are trying to rank to medium-high competition keywords, then you'll need at least 1,000 as a bare minimum on the page. That's my go-to number these days. But the best thing to do is to visit the top 10 sites for your keyword in Google and see how many words each one has. That will give you a good idea of how many to aim for on your own site. Just use tools like https://wordcounter.net/website-word-count to see the number of words on each page ranking.

Q – What other links can I use other than PBN's?

A – I go through this in the main Zon Boot Camp training area. The main thing is to get some sort of relevancy in the sites you get links from. Whether it's a blog comment, forum link or directory link, if you can get your main keyword into the title, domain name or URL of the page then the link will be powerful. For example, if I was to create a massage chair review site, then I'd look to get links from sites that have massage, massages, massage therapy, massage tips in the main domain name or the URL or title of the page on the site where my link would be. That is what Google is looking for these days, more than the actual anchor text of the link.
