The Undercover Spy Lab

In this lab, we examine a site that has been sold and see how we can replicate the results (without all the guesswork.)

This Months Site – theyogaboarder.com

Flippa Listing - https://flippa.com/6601805-theyogaboarder-com

Date Sold - 23rd July 2016

Price Sold For - $13,100

Age of Site When Sold – 16 months

Details – The site is in the standup paddle boarding niche. It used drop shipping as a way to create income but is ideal for an Amazon affiliate website. It had reviews on lots of different paddleboards and when someone purchased, they simply used a third party website to send the board to the buyer and they pocketed the profit.

Keywords Targeted – It targeted standup paddleboard related keywords along with 450 product reviews of individual boards.

Backlinks – The site has barely any backlinks reported. Only 12 referring domains using a Majestic SEO history search and only 1 backlink showing in Moz Open Explorer.

What My Plan Would Be To Clone The Results – I would set up a brand new site using a domain name that has 'standuppaddleboard' within it. I would then create 1,000 word content posts that target relevant keywords and also have reviews on as many paddleboards as I can find on Amazon. I would want to create at least 70 unique pages on the site and each will have my Amazon affiliate links on. With the products costing $300-$500+ each, there will be good commissions made for each sale.

Potential keywords I would target (with number of searches):

I would use social, Web 2.0 and PBN links to rank the site over the course of 12+ months.

The aim would be to get to $1,000+ per month in profit and then sell for $10,000+

* The site (like a LOT of sites sold on Flippa) is no longer live for whatever reason.

The Sniper Lab

The Sniper Lab is all about creating small 3-5 page websites that target buyer keywords with an Exact Match Domain (EMD).

You simply browse the Amazon marketplace to find products, then put those into the Google keyword planner and see what searches come up. Find one that gets 250+ searches a month that has a .com available domain and you're good to go!

You can use a free keyword tool like this one to get more accurate search volumes than the Google keyword planner now gives you.

These are really simple sites to make and each can make you 4 figures in profit when you sell them. They make great additions to add to your Amazon empire.

Here are some domains you can use right now (each one is available as I'm typing this and has a clean history):

doublehammockwithstand.com - 1,000 searches/month
standalonehammock.com - 880 searches/month
hammockandstandset.com - 590 searches/month
patiobenchwithstorage.com - 260 searches/month
gardendumpcart.com - 320 searches/month
digitalelectricsmoker.com - 480 searches/month
handheldsmoker.com - 320 searches/month
outdoorgaspizzaoven.com - 390 searches/month
walkbehindstringtrimmer.com - 1,300 searches/month
smallgaschainsaw.com - 260 searches/month

These will obviously be snapped up fast by members but give you an idea of what to look for. A new list will be added every month.

The Ranking Lab

Creating unique content to use for Web 2.0 sites or a Private Blog Network (PBN) can be either a lot of work or quite expensive when you are wanting to create a lot of backlinks to your websites.

So here are a couple of methods you can use to get virtually unlimited unique content for free (Disclaimer: Use at your own risk)

#1 - The Foreign Language Method

#2 - The Archive.org Method

The Q and A Lab

As this is the first month of Tony's Labs, we have no member submitted questions. So here are some common questions I see being asked in the SEO groups I am in:

Q - Renting backlinks, good or bad idea?

A - I personally never do it as I like to be 100% in control of the links pointing to my websites. But I do know people who do it and it can work. But there's a lot more risk involved, especially if you don't know the person you are paying for the links.

Are their sites all on unique servers? What other sites are they linking to? Is there a footprint that Google could easily see?

Renting links can seem like a lot less hassle but for me I will always be a fan of building out my own PBN network.

Q - I've heard blog comments are no longer useful as most are 'no-follow' is this true?

A - Whilst blog comments will typically be 'no-follow' links, they can still give a boost in rankings. They won't pass on the traditional link juice but do help to pass authority. The key is to get links from sites that have your keyword in their domain name, inner URL or page title (or a combination of each).

So if the page you are trying to rank is about adjustable dumbbells, then look for blog posts that have adjustable dumbbells in the main domain name, blog post URL or blog post title. To find these blogs, just do a Google search for

adjustable dumbbells "leave a reply"

and go through the first few pages of results to find blogs that are accepting comments. Don't leave small, spammy comments like "Great post". Read the article and leave a decent and information comment. This will get you more backlinks.

Don't go mad with blog commenting but 5-10 good backlinks a month can really push your rankings.

Q - I've heard Google doesn't like PBN networks and will ban sites using them, is this true?

A - Yes it's 100% true. But if you build your network to be as footprint free as possible then you won't trigger an automatic penalty filter. Just make sure all your PBN's are on different hosts, use privacy protection on your domain names and mix up the plugins and themes you use on them.

They are still by far the easiest and best way to rank any website and I'll cover how to build one within this 6 week training series.

Q - My website is stuck on page 2, what am I doing wrong?

A - It is really common these days for websites to get stuck on page 2 or 3. Google just takes a lot longer these days to move sites up. So getting stuck on these pages doesn't mean you have done something wrong, it could just mean you need to be patient and keep sending links to the site to make it look natural.

Just send links consistantly and try not to use your main exact keyword too many times, as that could trigger an over-optimization penalty.

Your site will move up eventually, just be patient.

Q - Is it possible to create and flip brand new sites without ranking them?

A - It is certainly possible and I know several people who do it successfully. But they do a lot of research into niches and what domain names to target. You can't just build a 5 page site on weight loss and sell it next day for $200 any longer.

Plus, Flippa.com raised their prices recently and charge $19 to list new sites and also take 15% commissions. So let's just do some calculations if you sell a site for $200:

Domain name = $9

Listing Fee = $19

Flippa Commissions = $30

That's $58 gone already even before you think about what content to add and how much it will cost.

That's why I prefer to only sell sites that are making money these days, as it's hard to make enough profit trying to sell brand new ones.
